Uncovering Log Issues With Our Safety Performance Report

A deep dive into our Fleet Performance Report and how Hours of Service metrics impact CSA scores

This 12-truck fleet is in deep trouble.. but not for long.

Here’s a REAL snapshot from a Safety Performance Report of a fleet that joined us just 60 days ago.

FMCSA says HOS compliance is a problem, and they’re right.

But we dug deeper. Here's what we found:

🔸 PC Miles – 36%
Drivers using Personal Conveyance right before they run out of hours = False Logs (mostly)

🔸 Uncertified Logs – 81%
Yes. Eighty. One. Percent.
That’s 8 out of 10 logs not being certified. That's a violation waiting to happen.

🔸 Bad Annotations – 10%
Even drivers unknowingly admitted in their own annotations that the logs were false.

Bottom line, this fleet runs mostly in violation. 81% of logs have “minor” form and manner violations. About half have “major” limit violations hidden under PC misuse and annotation.

But here’s what’s working:

💡 Dash cam utilization is at 100%
That means they can fight frivolous claims, save money on insurance, and recover from third-party damage claims.
(You’d be shocked how many fleets pay for dash cams but never check if they’re actually working. 7/10 fleets struggle with this. )

So here’s what we did (and what we’re doing next):

✔️ Fixed how they handled unassigned miles → Already improved 56%
✔️ Drivers are being trained on proper annotations and using split sleeper the right way.
✔️ Disabling/limiting PC status for problem drivers. The status option is "earned".
✔️ Certifications is now mandatory before starting a new log
✔️ Clear metrics and benchmark used to retain only safe drivers
✔️ We’re also showing the fleet manager exactly how many clean inspections they need to get out of alert. (It’s 8.)

💬 We’ve worked with worse. But the difference maker?

A management team that WANTS to improve and takes ACTION.

Give us 90 days and a team willing to change — we’ll flip the script.

Not gonna lie — it’s not easy.
Sometimes it means letting drivers go.
